The Mahdi family has refused to waive India’s nurse Nimisha Priya, who was trapped in the murder of Yemen’s citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi.
According to the CNBC report, Mahdi’s brother Abdel Fattah Mahdi clearly said on social media that I do not want any apology or compromise in the murder of my brother.
Mahdi said, justice will win, even if the punishment is delayed, but will take revenge. No matter how much pressure or pleas, we will not forgive and will not take blood money (the amount given for blood). Nimisha was to be sentenced to death on 16 July, but is currently postponed.

Mahdi said- Nimisha should be sentenced to death
In an interview to BBC Arabic, Mahdi also said, we demand ‘Kisas’ under the Sharia law. Nimisha should be sentenced to death.
He also said that not only murder, but the long legal battle of this case for years has also caused a lot of damage to our family. Therefore, they do not want to take any amount of compensation.
Nimisha’s claim to confiscate passport is false
Mahdi said in a Facebook post that some Indian media institutions are deliberately spreading false claims that Talal had seized or exploited Nimisha’s passport.
But this is completely wrong. Mahdi claimed that neither Nimisha Priya herself nor her legal team ever made any such allegation in the court.
He also said that in the entire legal process of Nimisha, lawyers appointed by the Indian Embassy were present and all the proceedings were transparent.
Mahdi accused the Indian media that she was presenting the convict as the victim. He wrote, “Its purpose is to mislead the public and create false sympathy for the criminal.”

The religious leaders of India and Yemen spoke
According to the report, on July 15, Grand Mufti AP Abubakar Musalupi of Kanthapuram in India and the famous Sufi scholar of Yemen Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz spoke on the issue. It also included a judge of the Supreme Court of Yemen and the brother of the deceased.
Sheikh Habib of Yemen was celebrated by Mufti Musaliar for talks. This is also the first time that a close member of the victim’s family is ready to negotiate.
The conversation took place under the Sharia Act, which gives the victim’s family legal right to forgive the guilty unconditionally or in exchange for blood money.

Negotiations took place through Riyadh, not Indian Embassy in Yemen
India does not have a permanent diplomatic mission in Yemen. In 2015, the Indian embassy was closed in the capital Sanaa due to political instability and was transferred to Djibouti (Africa).
The Government of India talks to the government of Yemen mainly through ‘Non-Regrant Ambassador’. The Government of India is currently talking through the ambassador present in Riyadh.
The Supreme Court expressed concern over Nimisha’s sentence
The Government of India had said in the Supreme Court on Monday that it cannot do much in the case of Nimisha. Attorney General R Venkatarmani had told the court- we can only go to an extent and we have reached there.
In this case, the lawyer of ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ told the court that the only way to save her is to accept the family of the deceased ‘blood money’ (compensation).
The victim’s family was offered US $ 1 million (about 8.5 crore rupees), but he turned down it. The family had said that the matter is related to their honor.

Nimisha was stuck there due to civil war in Yemen
Due to civil war in Yemen, India started ‘Operation Relief’ to evacuate its citizens from there. The operation lasted till April-May 2015, in which 4,600 Indians and about one thousand foreign nationals were removed from Yemen, but only Nimisha could not return to India.
In 2016, Mahdi started harassing physical harassment with Nimisha. He also grabbed the profit of Nimisha’s clinic. When Nimisha questioned this, the relationship between the two deteriorated. Mahdi did not want to let Nimisha go out of Yemen, so she kept Nimisha’s passport with him.
Nimisha also lodged a complaint with the police, but the police took Nimisha into custody for 6 days, as Mahdi claimed to be Nimisha’s husband by showing edited photos.

Nimisha gave an overdose of drugs, killing Mahdi
Nimisha was very upset. In July 2017, Nimisha injected her unconsciousness to get a passport from Mahdi, but it did not affect. Nimisha then gave overdose to Mahdi, causing her death.
According to media reports, Nimisha pieces Mahdi’s body into the water tank. After this, the police arrested Nimisha.
Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council sentenced Nimisha to death for the murder of Mahdi. Nimisha filed an appeal for apology in the Supreme Court of Yemen, which was rejected in 2023. President Rashad also approved the sentence on 30 December 2024.
Blood money raised from crowd funding to save Nimisha
To forgive Nimisha, her mother also tried to raise blood money by selling her property and through crowd funding.
In 2020, ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ was formed to protect Nimisha from punishment and collect blood money. A well-known businessman from Kerala announced to give Rs 1 crore to save Nimisha.
According to Sharia law, the victim side has the right to fix the punishment of criminals. There is a death sentence in the murder case, but the victim’s family can forgive the guilty by taking money. It is called ‘Diya’ or ‘Blood Money’, which is also mentioned in the Quran.
