Accident of night of 27 January 2024

The incident took place late on 27 January 2024, when 22 -year -old Gaganpreet Singh and Jagdeep Singh were roaming in a Red Ford Mustang car with their third friends. They came out of a nearby pizza shop. At that time the car was driving Gaganpreet and the car owner Jagdeep was sitting on the front seat.

Meanwhile, two witnesses informed the police that a person was lying on the road on the university drive. Around 1:41 pm, when the witnesses called 911, Gaganpreet hit the person.

Dead body dragged for 1.3 km

After the collision, both the accused stop the car for a while and get down and see under the car. At the same time, there is a car of witnesses and another car of their friends. A witness 911 tells Gaganpreet during the call- there is a man under your car.

But despite this, Gaganpreet starts the car and leaves fast. The person was still trapped under the car. During the investigation, it was found that both the accused dragged the car with the body for 1.3 km.

Surveillance video showed that Gaganpreet went some distance and tried to remove the body of the person again and again. But when the body did not come out, they reached a deserted street. Where Gaganpreet and Jagdeep forcibly brought the body down from the car. The video presented in the court clearly showed that Jagdeep is reverseing the car and Gaganpreet is pulling the dead body. Later, they left the body on the road and escaped from there.

The person who lost his life in this accident was identified in the court. The 47 -year -old man was in the name of. They left behind a child and wife. Crown lawyer Adam Jantunan in the court said that the victims were very dear to their family, friends and community.

While sentencing, Judge Mark Jeta said that the saddest thing in this case was that despite knowing that a person was trapped under his car, dragged him and finally ran away throwing the corpse. The judge called it full insensitivity and said that if there was only a road accident, it would not have been a criminal case, but the antics after the accident made the matter serious.

Defendants Argument

Gaganpreet’s lawyer Gagan Nahal told the court that his client had immediately accepted his mistake and confessed to the crime from the beginning. He said that both the youths have no criminal or traffic history, and they were regretting the incident. They were nervous and could not understand what to do. So they kept driving.

The judge considered his age, no prior records and crime to accept the softness in punishment, but also clarified that such negligence cannot be tolerated.
