For the first time, 3 years after the Russia-Ukraine war, the general public and soldiers took to the streets against President Jelonski in several cities, including Ukraine’s capital Kiev.
The Ukraine’s Parliament has recently passed a law, under which 2 major anti-corruption institutions, National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Office (SAPO) will be increased.
Critics say that this law will take away the freedom of these institutions and will control the investigation to the Attorney General, appointed by the President Jailonsky. This decision has hurt the basic objectives of transparency, democracy and war.

European Union and G-7 countries criticized
Many injured soldiers called it a betrayal of the soldiers fighting on the front. The move has also been criticized by the European Union and the G-7 countries, affecting Ukraine’s EU membership chances.

Many people say that this law is more morally a shock than Russia’s drone and missile attacks.
Jailonsky said- necessary to curb corruption Regarding the law, President Jelnesky said that corruption checks worth millions of dollars were pending and it was necessary to decide the accountability of the agencies. This is necessary to curb corruption in the country.
The Ukraine government has said that this step was necessary for national security during the war. The government says that Russian intelligence agencies had infiltrated these agencies, so it became necessary to bring them under the Attorney General.
Critics say that this law will take away the freedom of these institutions. This decision has hurt democracy.
Opposition- Jailonski wants to control agencies The Ukrainian opposition has expressed deep concern over the decision. They allege that this law is ‘an attempt to weaken democracy and bring the entire power under Jailonski’s possession’.
He says that the Russian-Ukraine has already been not holding the jail for 3 years due to the war. Recently, US President Trump alleged that Jailonski is not conducting elections by making an excuse for war and trying to remain in power.
Both institutions issued a statement
In a joint statement about the new law, both the institutions said, “If this law came into force, the head of SAPO will remain only named, and NABU will lose its freedom and become part of the Prosecutor General’s office.”
The European Union’s Extension Commissioner Marta Kos expressed concern over this law. He wrote on X, ‘This step will take Ukraine back. Independent institutions like NABU and SAPO are very important for Ukraine’s way of joining EU. The rule of law is at the center of the terms of joining the EU.
