Modi can discuss diamond business, essential minerals and uranium supply with the President of Namibia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for Namibia, the country of South Africa on 9 July. This is a Namibia tour of an Indian Prime Minister after 27 years. Modi will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Nadaitwa here. Diamond business, essential minerals and uranium supply between the two countries are likely to be discussed.
Apart from this, Modi will also address the Parliament of Namibia. Modi’s Namibia tour is part of a visit to 5 countries from July 2 to July 10, including Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia. Namibia is a country rich in diamond, uranium, copper, phosphate and other minerals.
Before PM Modi, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Namibia in 1998. Earlier in 1990, VP Singh, who was at that time, went there on the Independence Day of Namibia including VP Singh, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The most maritime diamond in Namibia does not direct India Namibia has the world’s highest reserves. There is more than about 80 million carat diamonds below the sea. However, Namibia does not direct raw diamond to India.
Instead, they reach the Indian coasts via London, Antwerp and other global trade centers. PM Modi’s visit can help in creating a base for direct purchase and sale of diamonds.
Especially because many diamond processing companies of India are already working in Namibia.
India has invested more than $ 800 million (about ₹ 6,600 crore) in many areas including mining, manufacturing, diamond processing and services in Namibia.
Apart from diamonds, Namibia contains cobalt, lithium and rare earth elements and minerals, which is necessary for India to move towards clean energy.
Namibia is also a major producer of uranium, which can help in India’s Civilian Nuclear Energy Program.
In 2022, 8 leopards from Boeing 747 came to India from Namibia. Namibia is the most populous country of wild cheetahs worldwide. On September 17, 2022, the Government of India ordered the first batch of 8 African cheetahs under a formal agreement (MOU) with the Government of Namibia.
These included 5 females and 3 males, then between two and six years old. After keeping 9 days in Quarantine, PM Modi left the cheetahs in Koono National Park in Madhya Pradesh. PM Modi named a leopard as Asha. Asha gave birth to three cubs in December 2024.
8 Cheetahs reached Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh from Windhok in Namibia from the modified Boeing 747 passenger plane.
The transfer of cheetahs from Namibia to India was the first intercontinental transfer of cheetahs in the world. Due to hunting and forest harvesting in India, the species of African cheetahs had become extinct for 70 years. African cheetahs were officially declared extinct in 1952.
India is directly the only country that Namibia has transferred leopards to settle in the forest. However, some cheetahs have been temporarily sent to the US and Europe institutes for scientific studies, zoos, or population management, but all these were very small and for conservation aim.
4.5 thousand crore trade in both countries last year In the last few years, there has been a boom in bilateral trade between India and Namibia. In the year 2024-25, there was a trade of about ₹ 4,858 crore from both sides. India’s exports were ₹ 2,798 crore and imports from Namibia were ₹ 2,061 crore.
The two countries had a trade of about ₹ 2,320 crore in the financial year 2022-23, of which India’s exports were ₹ 2,004 crore. Between April and November in 2023, there was a increase of about 5 thousand crores between the two countries with an increase of 178%.
During the 8 months, India’s exports were around ₹ 3,488 crore and imported about ₹ 1,962 crore from Namibia. By March 24, there was a trade of ₹ 6,735 crore from both sides, of which India’s exports were ₹ 3,785 crore.
