Today is the second day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Maldives. PM Modi will attend the 60th independence ceremony of Maldives today as the chief guest. During this time, the completion of 60 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Maldives will also be celebrated.
From 1887 to 1965, the foreign policy and defense of Maldives was under British control. On 26 July 1965, he got complete independence. India was the first country to recognize the Maldives.
A total of 8 agreements were signed between PM Modi and President Mujju, including debt, free trade agreement (FTA), fisheries and water agriculture, digital changes, pharmacopia and UPI.
Modi and Mujju also inaugurated the new building of the Ministry of Defense in Male. The Indian PM gifted Maldives a plant under the ‘Ek tree mother’s name’ campaign.
Modi said- India’s closest neighbor in Maldives
Speaking on India-Maldives relations, PM Modi said that friendship for us always comes first. India is the closest neighbor in Maldives. India’s neighbor has an important place in the first policy and ocean vision.
Modi said that India is proud to be the most trusted friend of Maldives. Whether it is crisis or an epidemic, India has always stood with them first. Whether it is the availability of essential commodities or to handle the economy after Kovid, India has always worked together.
Bycot Maldives campaign went on in India
In the last few years, India-Maldives relations have been ups and downs. In 2023, Mujju won the election with the ‘India Out’ slogan, but at the UN Cop-28 conference in Dubai in December 2023, PM Modi and Mujju’s meeting started reforming the relationship.
The two leaders agreed to increase the economic partnership and the interaction between the people. However, the ‘Bycot Maldives’ campaign began in India after some Maldives ‘visit to the Maldives’ visit to Lakshadweep by some Maldives ministers in early 2024.
After a visit to China in January 2024, Mujju said that Maldives could be a small country, but no one can “threaten” it. He had demanded the removal of Indian military personnel by May 2024, after which India removed the soldiers and sent technical employees in their place.

Relations improved in 2024. During the visit of Mujju in October 2024, India made a $ 750 million currency swap deal for Maldives. This helped the Maldives deal with the deficiency of foreign currency.
In May 2025, India further strengthened the Maldives’ economy by rolling the $ 50 million Treasury Bill.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that both countries have worked hard to improve relations. Agreements are expected in many areas during this visit, including new areas such as free trade agreement, renewable energy, fisheries and digital infrastructure.
Earlier, former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in 2015 and former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were the chief guest at the Independence Day celebrations in 2017.
100% Maldives can drown in 75 years

At the same time, the World Bank has warned that the sea level can rise from 10 to 100 cm, which can completely sink the Maldives. By 2021, land erosion has increased in 90% of islands in Maldives and clean drinking water in 97% of islands.
