North Korea’s Wonson-Kalma Beach Resort was opened on June 24 to North Korean tourists and foreign tourists on 1 June.
North Korea has suddenly closed its famous Wonsan-Kalma Beach Resort for foreign tourists. The North Korea government wanted to increase its foreign currency reserve by wooing foreign tourists through this resort.
The resort was the dream project of North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. Now many questions have arisen due to its sudden closure.
Wonsan-Kalma Beach Resort is a great tourist spot situated on the east coast of North Korea. It was started in 2014. It was called ‘Hawaii’ of North Korea.
It was opened for local tourists on 24 June. The resort has facilities like luxury hotels, beaches, water parks and shopping centers. About 20,000 people can stay at this resort simultaneously.

North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un opened the resort for North Korean Tourist on 24 June.

Work started in 2014 to make this resort, it was ready in 11 years.

The resort has a stay for around 20000 guests, with more than 150 hotels, villas, restaurants, shopping malls, water parks, gym and concert halls.

The resort is located in the city of Wansan near Kalma Island on the east coast. It is spread over the 4 km long Mongasasimi beach.

Here are water slides, swimming pools, sports facilities and entertainment facilities on the beach.

Kim Jong Un visited the resort with his wife Re Sol-Ju and daughter Kim Ju-A.

The purpose of this resort is to promote North Korea’s modern image and tourism sector.
Resort closed due to Russian journalist report
North Korea’s official tourism website DPR Korea Tour said without giving any concrete reasons that the resort has been temporarily closed, but some reports claimed that it had to be discontinued from the report of a Russian journalist.
Actually, this journalist went to the resort with Russian External Affairs Minister Sergei Lavarov and told that the ‘tourists’ present there are not real tourists, but sent them by the government. North Korea’s credibility was damaged after this revelation.

On July 12, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov arrived on a tour of North Korea.
Economic pressure is also a reason
Some experts believe that there was huge expenditure in running the resort. If foreign tourists do not come, then there will be no foreign currency like ruble, yuan or dollar. This can make it difficult to run the resort.
In addition, this decision may have been taken to fully prepare the resort or some more internal reasons.
Difficulties even due to the cost of travel
At the same time, Oh Gyong-Siob, the expert at the Korea Institute for National Unification in South Korea, says that North Korea took this decision for fear of negative consequences from allowing foreign tourists to come to the resort.
Some experts believe that this ban will not have much impact on Russian tourists, but due to the distance and cost of travel, it can be difficult to attract Russian tourists here.
