Who is Gurpatwant Singh Pannu?
- Gurpatwant Singh Pannu is originally from Khankot in Amritsar in Punjab. He currently lives in America and runs an organization called Sikh for Justice. He has citizenship of both America and Canada.
- In 2019, the Government of India banned Pannu’s organization SFJ under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act i.e. UAPA on charges of running terrorist activities. SFJ was supporting separatism and extremist ideology in Punjab under the guise of referendum for Sikhs.
- Pannu was accused of promoting separatism in 2020 and provoking Punjabi Sikh youth to take up arms. After this, the Central Government declared Pannu as a terrorist under UAPA on 1 July 2020. According to media reports, this was the main target of this alleged conspiracy. However, it is not mentioned in the FBI charge sheet.
