After the war with Israel, Iran started to exclude Afghan citizens rapidly.
More than 1.4 million Afghans have been forcibly evacuated in Iran since January. According to the United Nations (UN) refugee agency, around 20,000 Afghan refugees are being forcibly sent back to the border of Iran and Afghanistan.
This series increased rapidly after the 12-day war between Iran-Israel last month. Iran excluded more than 5 lakh Afghan citizens from the country between June 24 and July 9 i.e. in just 16 days.
Iran announced in March 2025 that Afghan migrants living illegally leave the country by 6 July, otherwise they will be forcibly evacuated. Iranian officials claimed that Afghani was involved in spying, terrorist attacks and drones for Israel and America.
Afghans are being targeted in Iran. Many Afghans told the media that they were beaten up and money was also taken away. At the same time, many minor children were sent to Afghan without elders.

The refugee said- we were thrown like garbage
People told New York Times that they have neither enough goods nor any expectation of the future. Mohammad Akhundzada, who worked in Iran for 42 years, said, “I worked hard in Iran for 42 years, my knees broke, and what I got now?”
Speaking to the media, an Afghan refugee Bashir, who was deported from Iran, told that the officials asked for 17 thousand rupees from him. Then kept two days in the detention center. During this time neither food nor water was given. According to Bashir, the officials abused him.
Another young man said that his father was caught and imprisoned on charges of espionage. He was not given food and water and later detailed and sent to Afghanistan.
Talking to The Guardian, an Afghan woman said that Iranian officials came to the night. They did not even let the children take clothes. Threw us like a garbage. On the way, took out the money from the bank card. 80 rupees for water bottle and 170 rupees for sandwich.
Consular attacks against Afghans in Iran increased
After the war with Israel, racial attacks against Afghans in Iran have increased. Many Afghans reported that they were abused, knife attacks and their wages were taken away.
Banks, schools, hospitals and shops have also refused to serve Afghans. Abrahim Kaderi told the media that he used to work in a cardboard factory in Tehran, where some people beaten him as a dirty Afghan and injured him with a knife.
His mother Gul Dasta Fazili said that four hospitals refused to treat his son as he was an Afghan. 35 -year -old Farah, who is a computer engineer in Tehran, said that the youths of the neighborhood attacked him and his 4 -year -old son.

Iran is removing minors without parents
People extracted from Iran have hundreds of minor children, many of whom are orphans and alone. According to UN, hundreds of children are being found on the border without parents every week.

The return of these refugees has caused Afghanistan’s already deteriorating economy. Afghans living in Iran used to send money to their families, which is now closed.
Out of 4.1 crore population of Afghanistan, more than half of humanitarian aid is dependent on humanitarian aid. The lack of unemployment, housing and health services has made the situation more serious.
Every day 20,000 to 25,000 people are crossing the border in Islam Kala. Afghan officials and United Nations agencies are trying to help, but there is a huge shortage of resources.
People are standing in queue for hours and taking registration and some emergency cash assistance.
Hundreds of minor children are also included in the people expelled from Iran.

Iran allows Afghans to live in only 10 areas

After the war with Israel last month, Iran intensified action against Afghans. Security forces conducted raids in cities, put check-points and sent thousands of Afghans into custody and sent them to exile centers.
Iran asked to leave the country by 6 July
Iran announced in March that illegal Afghans would have to leave the country and gave the deadline till July 6, but after the war it intensified.
According to media reports, they are also being deported by tearing the papers of the Afghans with valid documents. 36 -year -old Ali was born in Iran and was a legitimate resident, stating that his residency card was torn down at a checkpoint and sent to the exile camp.
Iran’s internal minister Iskandar Momeni claimed that since the beginning of 2025, 8 lakh Afghans have left the country, out of which 70% voluntarily gone.
Government spokesperson Fatima Mohazerani said that the departure of illegal Afghans is the demand of the public and it is necessary for the economic system, as many services in Iran are given on subsidy.
The future of women returning from Iran is in danger
Women face the most troubles in Afghanistan. After the Taliban came to power in 2021, there is a ban on girls’ studies above sixth grade in Afghanistan. At the same time, as the incidence of child marriage in the country increases, social consent is also being created.
Due to the education of girls and restrictions on work, many families are considering daughters as a burden and getting married quickly. According to a UN Women’s report, child marriage in the country has increased by 25% and adolescent pregnancies in the country due to Taliban’s anti-women laws.
The Taliban had also banned prayers for women in loud voice. In Afghanistan, women are also prohibited from walking alone, driving, working and going to the gym.

Un-Taliban government is not able to handle refugees
Concerns about Afghans are increasing internationally. According to the UN, the Taliban government does not have the ability to handle such a large number of returns. Foreign aid has already been cut in Afghanistan and more than 400 health centers have been closed.
Afghanistan Prime Minister Muhammad Hasan Akhund has appealed to Iran to soften in exile, so that tension between the two countries does not increase. Afghanistan Director Mia Park of the United Nations Migration Agency said that Iran should treat Afghans humanitarian and respectful.
Afghan citizen’s return intensified from Pakistan
In 2025, 16 lakh Afghans have been sent back in 2025, including Iran and Pakistan. UNHCR fears that this figure may go up to 30 lakhs by the end of the year.
According to UNHCR Afghanistan representative Arafat Jamal, Afghanistan is not ready to handle such a huge migration. There is no place, nor employment, nor security.
