Lord Meghnad Desai (85), a British economist of Indian origin and member of the House of Lords, died on Tuesday. According to sources associated with family, he breathed his last in a hospital in Gurugram.
He taught economics at the London School of Economics from 1965 to 2003. He was associated with the Labor Party in 1971 and was made a member of the House of Lords in June 1991. Gujarat -born Desai played an important role in strengthening the relations between India and Britain.
Due to their efforts, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was installed at the Parliament Square in London. He was among the prominent people who created the ‘Human Development Index’. He also wrote about 30 books. Lord Desai was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2008.
Born on 10 July 1940 in Vadodara city of Gujarat, Desai did his BA, MA in Economics from Mumbai University and PhD from Pennsylvania University in 1960.
