Satyajit Ray’s house in Bangladesh was built about a hundred years ago. After partition in 1947, this property became under the Bangladesh government.
India on Tuesday appealed to Bangladesh to stop the decision to demolish the famous filmmaker and litterateur Satyajit Ray’s demolition of the ancestral property. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) told the Bangladesh government that they should reconsider their decision.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement, ‘We are very sad that the ancestral house of Satyajit Ray located in Maman Singh, Bangladesh is being demolished. The house was of Satyajit Ray’s grandfather and eminent litterateur Upendra Kishore Ray Chaudhary. This property is currently in a shabby state, owned by the Government of Bangladesh.
The ministry said, ‘This building is a symbol of the Bengali cultural renaissance. Given the history of the building, it would be better to consider repair and reconstruction options as a symbol of the Sahitya Museum and the shared culture of India-Bangladesh. The Government of India is ready to help for this.

On July 15, the Ministry of External Affairs offered the Bangladesh government help to repair Satyajit Ray’s house.
Mamta Banerjee said- this building is associated with the history of Bengal This response of the Government of India about Satyajit Ray’s ancestral house came after reports that Bangladeshi officials are going to demolish this building. Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had criticized Bangladeshi officials for the move to demolish the house.
Mamta said that this building is deeply associated with the cultural history of Bengal. He said in a social media post, “I appeal to the Bangladesh government and all the conscious people of that country to take steps to conserve this heritage.” The Chief Minister of West Bengal had also appealed to the Government of India to intervene in the matter.
Mamta Banerjee appealed in the post on X to save Satyajit Ray’s ancestral house.
