Buddhist was the main religion of Maldives for 1000 years
About two and a half thousand years ago, people started settling for the first time in Maldives. Some historical stories suggest that the foundation of the ancient monarchy in Maldives was laid by Buddhist king Shri Surudasarun Aditya, son of King Brahmaditya of Orissa (Kalinga in ancient times).
It is believed that Buddhism reached Maldives during his reign. Historians believe that Buddhism was the main religion of Maldives for more than 1000 years. During this time the culture, language and ancient Dhivahi script of Maldives developed.
Many islands in Maldives still exist remains of Buddhist monasteries and structures. They are called ‘Havitta’ or ‘Ustubu’ in local language.

6 Islamic dynasty ruled Maldives
Islam entered the Maldives through Arab traders in the 9th and 10th centuries. The last Buddhist king of Maldives Dhowami accepted the religion of Islam in the year 1153.
According to ancient documents, Maghrebi (North African) Islamic scholar Abu al-Barkat Yusuf al-Barbari converted the king to Islam.
Dhowami was named Sultan Sultan Muhammad Ibn Abdullah. With this, Islamic rule began in Maldives. It took Maldives about 150 years to become an Islamic nation from Buddhist country.
The Maldives ruled the 6 dynasties in the Maldives under the Islamic rule, which lasted until 1968.
In 2008, the new constitution of Maldives declared Islam as official religion and Islam was made mandatory for citizenship.

According to the folklore of Maldives, there was a terror of Rannamari, a sea monster in Maldives during King King Dhowami. Every month a virgin girl was sacrificed to calm this demon.
The king used to choose a girl every month through a lottery. The girl was then kept in a tower for Rannamari, and the next day she was found dead.
Once when the only daughter of a family was selected to sacrifice, the family was very sad. Abu al-Barkat was staying at the house of that family. He offered to spend the night in the tower in place of the girl.
That night he read the verses of the Quran in the tower. When the Rannamari came, he ran away after hearing the verses of the Quran. In the morning, Abu al-Barkat was found alive and safe.

King Dhowami asked Abu al-Barkat if he could drive away Rannamari forever. The king promised that if the demon ran away forever, he would convert the whole country to Islam.
After this, the Rannamari never returned again. According to his promise, King Dhowami accepted Islam and started propagating Islam in the country.
Britain got full independence in 1965
The Maldives has had an influence of many foreign powers at different times. In 1558, the Portuguese captured the Maldives and controlled the capital Male for about 15 years. In 1573, it got independence from Portugal.
In addition, in 1887, Maldives signed an agreement with the British rule, under which Maldives maintained their internal autonomy, but the foreign policy and defense were under British control. On 26 July 1965, Maldives got complete independence.
Apart from this, in ancient times, this country was under the influence of Sinhalese rulers of Sri Lanka and Chola Empire of South India.
Maldives Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir signed the independence agreement with Britain in 1965.
100% country can drown in 75 years
The Maldives towards the rest of the world is also not untouched by the crisis of climate change. The rapidly growing water level of the sea can submerge most parts of the Maldives.
According to scientific reports, if global warming continues like this, by 2050, 80% of the Maldives will not be worth living, and by 2100, the whole country can enter the sea.
IPCC, a large organization of scientists, says that by 2100 sea levels can rise from 59 centimeters to 1 meter. The average height of the Maldives is 1.5 m and the highest part is 2.4 meters.
At the same time, the World Bank has warned that the sea level can rise from 10 to 100 cm, which can completely sink the Maldives. By 2021, land erosion has increased in 90% of islands in Maldives and clean drinking water in 97% of islands.
