Former Maldives President Mohammad Nasheed has said that if India had not been there, our economy would have been ruined.

Talking to the news agency ANI, Nasheed said that the economic situation of his country had become so bad that if India had not helped in time, Maldives would have become bankrupt (default).

He said that when there was a huge debt on Maldives and it became difficult to pay, India immediately sent help. This helped a lot in keeping the country’s economy stable. Nasheed said,

Talking to ANI, Nasheed said that the foreign policy of Maldives has always been India First. Nasheed admitted that Maldives’ policy bows towards China due to elections, but now it is not so.

Nasheed said that the entire politics of Maldives has come on India First Policy. According to him, India also gives importance to Maldives. Prime Minister Modi’s visit is evidence of this.

He said that this journey will only strengthen the relationship as well as open new avenues of development. Praising India’s economic growth, Nasheed said that India’s progress goes along with neighboring countries.

He said that Maldives has also got major economic possibilities from India’s Neberhood First Policy. This has increased the number of Indian tourists rapidly.

‘India and Maldives should have a new trade agreement’

Nasheed suggested that there should be a trade agreement between India and Maldives. With this, Maldives will be able to sell more fish permanently in India.

According to Nasheed, there is a huge demand for Maldives fish in India. If there is a trade agreement between the two countries then it will be beneficial for both countries.

He said that this will also increase cooperation in areas like logistics, shipping and sustainable marine development. Nasheed hoped that Prime Minister Modi’s visit would increase the number of Indian tourists further.

He informed that Hanimadu Airport being built with Indian help is now almost ready and it will be just one hour from many cities in South India.
