China has started building the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Sangpo in China) in Tibet. It was started by Chinese Prime Minister Lee Kyang on Saturday.
Its total cost has been reported to be around 167.8 billion dollars (about 12 lakh crore rupees). This dam is being built in Ningchi city bordering Arunachal Pradesh. Both India and Bangladesh have expressed deep concern about this.
According to China’s official news agency Xinhua, the project will have five terraced hydroelectric stations. This will generate more than 300 billion kW-hour electricity every year. This electricity can meet the needs of 30 crore people.

Currently, the world’s largest hydroelectric power station ‘Three Gorges’ Dam is built on the Yangji River in Hubei province of China. Its annual capacity is 88 billion kWh per hour.
Why is India opposing the dam?
The dam built on the Brahmaputra River will be built in the huge valley of the Himalayas at the eastern end of the Tibet Plateau. Earthquakes often occur in this area. The construction of the dam can cause pressure on the ecosystem, which can lead to many accidents.
India’s north-eastern state and Bangladesh are already facing fierce flood incidents and due to climate change they may have to face more challenges such as landslides, earthquakes and floods etc. This is the reason why India’s concern has increased due to the construction of this dam.
A spokesman for the Indian Foreign Ministry had objected to this dam in a press briefing on 3 January. India had said that building the dam on the Brahmaputra should not harm the interests of the lower states.

India is also a dam on Brahmaputra
India is also building a big dam on this river in Arunachal Pradesh. Expert level mechanism (ELM) has been running between India and China over the Brahmaputra and Sutlej since 2006.
The issue was also raised in a conversation between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in December last year.
In 2015, China started the Jam Hydropower Station costing $ 1.5 billion in Tibet. Even then, India had expressed concern that China could gradually occupy the water level and direction of the Brahmaputra.
