A 7.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Alaska, USA late Wednesday. After this, a tsunami warning was issued. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at around 12:37 pm local time.
According to the National Center for Sismology, the center of the earthquake was at a depth of 36 km above the ground. There is a possibility of offerchock (post -earthquake shocks) due to low depth. Low -depth earthquakes are usually more dangerous than deeper earthquakes.
Because the distance of seismic waves from low -depth earthquakes to reach the surface is less, causing more damage to the land and causes more damage to the buildings. This is also more likely to cause casualties.
Alaska is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for frequent earthquakes and active volcanoes. Alaska had a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in March 1964, the most powerful earthquake in North America. The earthquake destroyed the city of Encourage. Later a tsunami came, which destroyed the Gulf of Alaska, the west coast of the US and Hawaii.
